Though it’s a few days from the full moon, there’s a werewolf on the prowl tonight- when we bring a vintage Svengoolie show back on the Me-TV Network- it’s “The Boy Who Cried Werewolf”!
In this 1973 flick, a divorced dad takes his son on a fishing trip to a remote cabin in the woods. While taking an evening stroll, a werewolf attacks them, and the dad fights him off- getting bitten in the process ( as opposed to bitten in the arm?). As they view the attacker, who was thrown over a cliff- he appears to be an ordinary man, impaled on part of a wooden fence! The local cops surmise that it was some deranged drifter- but the young son Richie insists that the attacker was an actual werewolf!
When the dad returns Richie home to his mom, the boy is still sticking to his story- and soon, a psychiatrist is assuming that the poor boy is imagining that in order to justify that his father has killed a man. He suggests that father and son return to the cabin for a nice quite visit, where the boy will see that everything there is fine, and this will dispel his werewolf fears.
Great idea- and they do- except- remember how dad got bitten in that scrap with the attacker? Well, it’s full moon time again- and, while his son goes down to the stream for some fishing, Dad suddenly starts to transform-and goes on the prowl for his first victim- his own son! The kid manages to escape- while Were-Dad begins a rampage, with innocent people meeting a gruesome end. As the nights of the full moon progress and the victim count increases, Richie not only hides to escape the monstrous creature-but also finally realizes that the werewolf is none other than his own father! Upon his return home, he tries to convince his mother of the fact- which brings about, eventually, another brilliant idea- how about if all THREE of them go to the cabin? Hmm… and it’s about a month later- full moon, anyone?
This is quite a werewolf tale with one of the most unusual looking wolfmen ever (make-up by Thomas Burman, who also designed some of the “beast man” make-up for the 1977 “Island of Dr. Moreau”)-and the werewolf and his alter ego are played by Kerwin (not Berwyn) Mathews, whom we’ve seen on our show as Sinbad! Young Richie, Scott Sealey, never made another movie after this- I wonder why?-while his hot mom, Elaine Devry, appeared in lots of television shows from the 1950s to the 90s!
A word of warning for “Svensurround” fans- we originally did this show back when we always did one full segment of the movie in that amazing process- so be prepared for that! It’s a bit of hairy hilarity – amidst the dead –serious tale of “The Boy Who Cried Werewolf”- tonight at 9 pm central/ 10 eastern time on the Me-TV Network!
For more Sven fearful fun earlier in the day, you can also catch “The Creature Walks Among Us”-with the Gill Man from the Black Lagoon back and breathing air- at noon on WCIU- and, as part one of the Svengoolie/Elvira double feature at 3 pm on U Too- we bring you one of our most requested movies –the Chiodo Brothers’ “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”!
Please come back to the blog tomorrow- when I’ll give you all the details for a couple Sven public appearances that are coming up this week that you may find of interest!
