No, I am not referring to a certain detestable basketball team having a televised game…it looks like we’re heading into a week that will have pretty steamy temperatures here in the Sven headquarters city of Chicago (just a few miles from Berwyn!) There will be a lot going on this week, and next weekend (we’ll get to that as the week progresses)…but, let’s begin the week with some random thoughts from various corners of my tiny little mind…
First of all, many thanks for all the kind wishes on my 33rd anniversary as Sven- I really enjoyed all the comments about what stage of YOUR life you were at when you first saw me! It was also fun to see some of the pictures that people came up with- including the original TV Guide ad for my very first show- that didn’t even include my name because the genius WFLD management folks weren’t sure they wanted me to call myself “Son of Svengoolie”! It’s nice that these wonderful fans and I have made- and are continuing-this journey together. It cetainly had some symmetry to the Museum of Broadcsating’s anniversary this past week, with so many broadcast luminaries who have been around, and continue their own journeys through their careers.
That reminds me- yes, that WAS a picture of yours truly in the Sun Times yesterday in a collection of photos from the museum event.I kind of wish they had used the OTHER picture they took- with Mancow, a big fan of the Sven show, hamming it up, with his jacket pulled up on his head, imitating a sort of hunchbacked ghoul! Maybe they’ll post that one on line.
This past weekend, I attended another milestone event- at this year’s PCW Wrestling “Dream Night”, I watched my friend Johnny Mac wrestle his final match. Though Johnny is a young man, he decided to leave the squared circle- and did so in grand fashion, in a fun match where he ( in his character as an arrogant nasty “heel”)lost his title belt to “good guy” (or, in pro wrestling terminology, “face”-short for “babyface”) JTW. In reality, John IS a good guy and a real champ in every sense of the word. Along the way that night, I also had the opportunity to meet the lovely Christy Hemme of TNA Wrestling, as well as an icon from the WWE Hall of Fame- the Million Dollar Man, Ted Dibiase! No tuxedo jacket with dollar signs stitched into the lapels for Ted that night- just a polo shirt. He was very friendly- we talked about his son, Ted Jr., who is on the current WWE roster, and recently made him a grandfather, and how his having bookings would delay their celebrating Father’s Day together- since he was booked to speak at a church in Arlington Heights on Sunday (Mr. Dibiase is indeed a religious man, again showing how different a wrestler can be from his character!) I’m sorry that I did miss out on meeting another WWE Hall of Famer who was in attendence- the man who was WCW’s first black champion, tag partner of John Bradshaw Layfield, and the guy who made the word “….DAMN!” a pro wrestling catchphrase and punchline- Ron Simmons. All in all, we had a great time- thanks to our friends at PCW again.
I also found out that another major big name current wrestler is a fan of our show…but more about that in the future…
Let’s see if we can take the heat this week- and hope for a cooldown by the weekend, when Mr. Goolie has two days in a row outdoors meeting the public…something tells me I’m going to need the OTHER kind of “fans”…
Sven/Rich, “It’s not the heat…it’s the humidity”…an old but somewhat truthful phrase. We’ll have both for several days this week. We’re still in Spring technically..the Summer Solstice occurs in a couple of days..With the 87 and 85 degree daily highs this last March the Chicago area (and many parts of this country) started the “Summer” season early.
Rich/Sven – my computer has been down for several days, and I missed my opportunity to comment on your anniversary. So a belated congratulations on 33 “scarerific” years, and a hope for many, many more.
Also, loved the show Saturday. In many ways, “The Mummy’s Hand” is my favorite of all the Mummy sequels. I think the comedy bits (and no, not yours. Yours can make ANYTHING worth watching) help to liven things up a little, and for some reason, I’ve always found Tom Tyler’s Kharis to be quite scary. I especially like the ending, when the bubbling pot of Tanna fluid gets tipped over, and Kharis tries desparately to drink some from off the floor prior to being set ablaze. Seems to me I had a comic book adaptation of this movie many years ago, ’cause I remember that scene in comic format… Sound familiar to anybody else?
Anyway , congrats on a great show, and especially on those 33 years of scares, comedy, and fun!!!
i know what you mean, sven. cincinnati is famous for weather extremes too. this week we’ll be starting out at 90 degrees and topping out at 94 by thursday, before the so-called storms come in to cool us off (if you call 87 degrees cool) by the week’s end cool. most likely it’ll be a 100 or above here. the hills surrounding the city tend to keep in the heat, its like walking down a hill to a pool. you hit the heat like a wall, then you get the cool part closer to the ohio river. august is like a visit to a desert here. we lost most of our wrestling entertainment when wwe took over wcw and ecw. we had two good training camps that put on good shows, heartland (hwa) in cincy and ovw down in louisville kentucky. worst thing the owners of wwe did was combining the three shows. i would’ve had the seperate shows still, with a series of championships leading up to wrestlmania becoming a world series of wrestling that had the best wrestlers that year from all three shows wwe, wcw, and ecw being represented. but vince and his cronies got greedy and destroyed it. a golden opportunity missed. have not went to a wwe event in cincy or watched one since 2002. i have great respect for the wrestlers mind you, just very little for those running wwe now. long live the good old days of the wcw and my favorite ecw! sorry, i did see the soapbox under my feet. anyway, i hope your right and we get some cold temps by the end of the week. later…
I would have LOVED to shake hands with The Million Dollar Man! How cool! Did you get a picture with him?
Too bad you missed Ron Simmons. That would have been awesome.
PS: Happy 33rd!
Greetings Sven- Mega-congrats 4 33 yrs in da biz! When can we expect your presence in Columbus Ohio?
Well, here’s what I think. . . that is to say. . . my point is. . . but the main thing is. . . what I really mean. . . I got nothin’.
Humid, Hot, don”t matter what you call pre-summer. It”s still hotter then H-E-double hockey sticks. considering the only way I cool off, is to run face first into a cool breeze. Or hang my head out a car window, which gives me the urge to bark at people. Don”t worry, winters not to faraway. Then everyone will want the heat. Be “COOL”.
I was at the “Dream Night 11″ also at Oak Lawn pavilion and it was great but I missed seeing you.. I saw Chet Coppock and said hello and the wrestling was great! ! was taking some video and one of the heels from the 8 man tag match came by and pushed my camera! Priceless footage, showed grandkids video and they wondered why the wrestler did that. Had to explain that is his character, disrepecting the fans.
