Thanks to everybody who came out to Joliet for the big Slammers game last night- I’ll elaborate on that in tomorrow’s blog- but- tonight on Me-TV, John Carradine hits a home run when he joins the team of Kharis (with Lon Chaney Jr. stepping in as the living Mummy) for ‘The Mummy’s Ghost”!
Some years after “The Mummy’s Tomb” (which, if you need a refresher in Chicago, you can catch on WCIU this morning at 11 am)- Yusef Bey ( Carradine)is informed by the ancient high priest that Kharis, thought to have burned to oblivion in America, actually still lives! He instructs Yusef in the secret tanna leaf brewing ritual that will attract and nourish the Mummy, keeping him alive (so- in all these years he was thought dead- who was feeding him the tanna leaf tea? Oh, well- never mind…) and sends him off to the U.S. to find and retrieve Kharis , and bring back the remains of his true love, the Princess Ananka, whom the American infidels have placed in one of their museums.
In the college in the town where the Mummy once wreaked havoc- we listen to a professor who lectures about the story of the Mummy’s murderous rampage to some young students, including a beautiful young woman with Egyptian roots. For some reason, when she thinks of Egypt, she begins to feel…strange…
One night, the professor is at home, researching – and finally thinks he has discovered the ancient formula of Egyptian lore! He proceeds to brew up the old tanna leaf concoction- and it attracts Kharis from wherever he’s been in hiding- which isn’t good news for the professor. Nor is it too good for our young coed, who suddenly rises, sleepwalks, and collapses outside the professor’s house as the Mummy shuffles away after killing the poor man and drinking the tanna tea.
Of course, the local police find it suspicious that she was found outside the murder scene- but her boyfriend intervenes and tries to help his confused love. Some of the locals recognize the mold left on the dead professor’s throat- and can’t believe that it means the Mummy has returned! Meanwhile, Yusef Bey has arrived- and does his own tanna brewing to attract Kharis and place him under his control. They begin their search for the remains of Ananaka, but plans change when it appears that the Egyptian princess has been reincarnated- with her soul taking residence in…guess who!- the young coed!
Soon, it’s the town versus the Mummy- and things get complicated when Yusef Bey finds himself attracted to the reborn Ananka! Will his control of Kharis be strong enough to overcome the Mummy’s desire for his beloved?
The big name cast of the great John Carradine and Lon Chaney Jr. as Kharis make this entry in the Mummy saga especially noteworthy. We’ll talk about them and the rest of the cast- plus, provide some trivia- like who actually got hurt during filming and is visibly bloody in one scene! Lots of Sven fun as well, and, as a bonus, since the movie is short- another “Svensurround”-spangled serial episode- this time, it’s “Commando Cody”!
“The Mummy’s Ghost” will run at 9 pm central time (check your local listings) all over North America on the Me-TV network. For local Chicago viewers- as I said, you get one more look at “The Mummy’s Tomb” at 11 am on WCIU- and , at 3 pm on U Too- the “lost” 1950s Sven show, ”Phantom from 10,000 Leagues”!
Remember, I’ll be at the Lake in the Hills Rockin’ Ribfest tomorrow, from noon to 2 pm-click on “appearances” on this site for details!
Stay cool at the personal appearances, Sven! Well, you can’t keep a good Mummy down! Will John be the ultimate Carr(adine)taker of our wrap star Kharis? He seems inclined to get into the same love triangle situation with Kharis and the leading lady that Turhan Bey fell into in “The Mummy’s Tomb” last week. If these Mummy managers would study previous game films (that is, watch last week’s “Svengoolie”) they could learn from each other! Get those Mummy munchies ready and enjoy “The Mummy’s Ghost”! Boooooooo!
Well after being gone from Chicago for 7 long years and now living in Hell Texas…this is the FIRST time in 7 years I get to watch Svengoolie since we just got MeTv and the program formats changed! He has been a staple of my childhood and cannot wait to watch tonight!! Since I cannot be back home physically, this is a small piece of home coming to me!
Keep up the great work Sven and thanks for the updates!
“The Mummy’s Ghost” may very well be the best of “The Mummy’s Hand” sequels. Director Reginald LeBorg gives it some real style, Lon Chaney, Jr., gives his best performance as Kharis, giving the role some pathos, as well as some extra rage and fury, and the ending (which I most reveal for first-time viewers) is most atypical of 1940s horror films. My one question: This was just shown in mid-March. Why are you showing it again so soon? Is it because other cities have not yet gotten all the recent Sven shows, or is it because you wanted to show the 1940s Mummy films, as much as possible, in sequence, this time around? At any rate, it’s still a good flick, and as I’ve said before, I’d rather watch a Sven re-run any day of the week than the prime time junk the major networks and cable stations show.
Sven, thank you for coming out to the baseball field. You fulfilled one of my dreams. Since I was a kid, I always wanted to meet you. Use to watch you on that ‘other’ network. One of my favorite sound effects is the ‘ow, OW …OWWW’.
. I still keep an eye on eBay for a certain type of auctions……. I got your back my friend and Jerry’s
. You are the best! Thank you for suffering through that extreme heat and signing autographs and photos for us all!
The perfect way to close out a blazing hot week—with a stone-cold Chaney mummy chiller! “Mummy’s Ghost” is definitely the best of the three Chaney mummy films, and John Carradine is definitely the best high priest ever. The scene with the on-camera injury has to be the one in the museum when the mummy pushes the watchman into a glass door, with big shards of glass hitting the elderly actor in the head. You can see Chaney is concerned but doesn’t break character and blow the shot, like the total pro he was. A pretty cool moment. I’m sure you will also point out that Robert Lowery played Bruce Wayne/Batman in the 1949 serial “Batman and Robin.” Looking foward to my weekly fix of Kirk, Spock and Svengoolie tonight!
Sven, you are so entertaining but these awful mummy movies really bite. Why did Universal make so many?? And next week is Francis the Talking Mule. Oh brother. I know your hands are tied. Why can’t the powers-that-be see that you are underutilized with these bad flicks?
Nice one, Jack! As usual, it looks like the tanna leaves won’t be the only thing getting into hot water tonight. I have rather enjoyed seeing these mummy movies together. Sven, you know I’m gonna be up for whatever you’ve got. You keep it all very entertaining! Many thanks.
Sven,
where can one obtain these tanna leafs? Can I drop da’ ‘T”
And use banana leaves instead?
I got a wife I want hauled away…
Angie saz’
“Why can’t the powers-that-be see that you are underutilized with these bad flicks”?
Why Angie sweety, Da’ great and powerful (smell’in) Sven ain’t utter-utilized…
Ohh wait a minute..thar’ aint no cows above or with him..
Now, I got egg all over my face…..
First of all, Angie: These Mummy movies don’t “bite”. They are groovy. Save that comment for the next bad Dracula movie. And the bad movies ARE the whole point. Sven has more fun with these. And Alex: Love the idea of using banana leaves. Then maybe the mummy can climb trees and throw his own feces. And Jack (Pret): Your puns are pun-ishing us! Do these bloggers even know you are the original Dr. Pretorius? As old and decrepit as ever! And am I the only one that wonders if the mummy uses some of his wrappings in the toilet? And ask yourself: What could be more smelly than a mummy’s FOOT!
Hi, Svengoolie! Grew up with ya in Chicago & so happy told on TV in Dallas-Ft Worth Ares! “Berwyn!”. No, DFW area! Just was wondering, do you think the Mummy’s Favourite Pizza is “Tombstone?!”. Cheese, sausage, & tanna leaves?
Can’t wait every week to see your show & know Family in Chicago Also watching!!! Let me know when you get to the remake of dead “Joan Crawford ” film, starring herself in, “Mummy Dearest!”. Have a great show tonight & if ya get tired, boil 3 tanna leaf tea. Don’t use 9 or out of control..besides running out of leaves sooner! One quick question: did you notice that Immediately After speaking words on how to take care of the Mummy, the high priest Suddenly drops dead?! What’s up with that?!! And if they want to make the dames in last 2films drink boiled tanna leaves to live forever…how come they didn’t take some themselves….as to not Drop Dead after placing necklace over New high priest’s head?!! Maybe the jewelry was too heavy to keep wearing, Claris to darn demanding, or no air conditioning in Tombs & just had it?!? What do you think?
Have a great day…and even better Night!!!
That 50s episode is one of the best pieces of work you’ve ever done. I’m sure you’d get a great reaction from your non-Chicago viewers if you could somehow work it into the main schedule sometime. (And the big band theme, how great is it to hear that!)
Is this the Mummy movie with the infamous missing scene? The one where a little girl befriends Kharis and invites him to play “tanna tea party” with her. But K finds it’s only pretend-tea, and angrily tosses her into a kiddie pool!
Or was that just Lon Chaney’s memory of it?
Sven, it looks like ME-TV isn’t coming back on AT&T U-Verse in the Chicago area. I’m going to have to switch to Comcast ASAP. Do you know what is going on with them? AT&T claimed they were “negotiating a new contract”. And it was supposed to be resolved by the 4th of July. To say I’m mad about this would a total understatement!
Glad I have the night off tonight so I can enjoy the evening with Sven! haven’t been tuning in latley as I’m always working, but I have to agree with Angie; these Mummy movies are a “Drag” (pun intended!). I have the original Aurora Mummy model and it looks like they took the pose from this particular film. Anyway, I’ll enjoy tuning in as it’s been a few weeks. How about some of the old 50′s “Giant Bug” movies?? Might you have any of those on the upcoming schedule??
The “Mummy” commercial. That was classic. Now I remember that comedic ingredient that used to make this show so entertaining back in the day. Forget the snuggie, try on “The Mummy.” Lol.
The movie where the guy dies in the fountain in “the Omega Man”.
That movie that your viewer asked about sounds like (from his description) “The Omega Man” 1971.
The answer to question is the omega man
movie guess: The Omega Man is what you were looking for.
the movie you were asked about is called the “Omega Man” (1971) starring Charlton Heston. It’s a remake of the “Last Man on Earth” with Vincent Price.
The Omega Man with Charelton Heston is the movie your viewer in the mail segment was looking for!!!
He dies in a fountain at the end and everyone else are like zombies with white hair, trying to kill him.
XOXO
Shannon
The movie your fan mentioned was ‘The Omega Man’
In answer to the mail bag question, my guess is “The Omega Man,” a Chuck Heston vehicle based partly on “I Am Legend.”
the movie were the man dies in the fountain is “omega man ” . It stars Charlton Heston.
The movie the guy was asking is called omega man staring charleston heston
Hey Sven,
We watch your program every week. The name of the movie that you viewer is looking for may be the Charlton Heston film The Omega Man.
lol Looks like great minds think alike!! (and all within 2 minutes of each other)
The movie about the people with white hair sunglasses and a dead guy in the fountain is…………………………….. Omega Man . I am legend was basically a remake of the same film.
I think the movie with the characters who wore black after they were infected is “hysterical”. But… What difference does it make?
damn dirty muuuuuuutants
But it was killed by people who where uninfected
Sorry “he”
It was union rules if you got infected you had to wear the uniform lol
omega man’s aremake of vincent price 1960 the last man on earth
Seriously! You didn’t know that the movie described with silver haired dudes with the guy dying in the fountain was the Omega Man with Charlton Heston!
It’s an all time classic.
He survived a man made plague that turned the entire population into some type of vampire by injecting his experimental vaccine after a helicopter crash.
He was using his antibodies as a cure and was killed in the end by the vampire leader who hated technology.
A viewer asked about movie with white haired people and man who’s blood is cure and dying in fountain at end.
The Omega Man
Charlton Heston
Original was “The Last Man On Earth” Vincent Price
Later remade I Am Legend Will Smith
Thanks Love the Show!!!!
omga man is the movie you are looking for
How likely would it be to get the Omega Man on the show Sven?
While I agree that Mummy sequels were kind of hit or miss when compared to the original, this has to rate as one of the better ones. You can usually count on Carradine for an enthusiastic performance and he sure delivers in this one. Then too, I had almost forgotten the sterling performances of the canine actors in the cast. It’s hard to go wrong with a visit from Commando Cody to conclude the big broadcast.
the answer to your movie question is the omega man. it starred charlton heston. and the remake is titled i am legend.
Omega Man is the name of the movie you were looking for
made in 1971 starring Charlton Heston, by the way my family and I love your show and watch it all the time
The movie where a disease is turning people in to zombies is The Last Man on Earth.(1964)
I am the 1000th person to answer this but the film in question is THE OMEGA MAN with Chuck Heston…..and before that was Vincent Price in THE LAST MAN ON EARTH……I enjoy the show…..
Just adding to my earlier comment, overall it was a pretty decent cast with good production values for one of the later sequels in the series. I just usually enjoy seeing John Carradine in roles like this anyway. Barton Maclane was his signature tough guy self. Living up to the original would be tough for anyone but this was one that I was glad to see again. Thanks, Sven. Man, a lot of people like the Omega Man. I’ve seen (and enjoyed) the version with Vincent Price but I don’t think that I have seen the one in question.
RE: The Omega Man
All three movies (“The Last Man on Earth” with Vincent Price, “The Omega Man” with Charlton Heston, and “I Am Legend” with Will Smith) were all based on the book “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson, one of the big three writers for “The Twilight Zone”.
I don’t know if Sven can show that movie, though, since AFAIK the rights to the movie are owned by Warner Brothers. (At least they’re the ones who released it on DVD.)
The movie is called The Omega Man. Charleston Heston
Hi Just watched Mummy’s Ghost Loved it… By the way I know the title of the film A viewer was trying to find out some 70′s film that had people turning white and wearing black clothing well the title is OMEGA MAN 1971 starring Charleton Heston and Anthony Zerbe as the leader of the Albino Vampires
Regarding “The Mummy’s Ghost”: I always get a kick out of watching little dogs who seem way smarter (and let’s face it – who also have better diction) than the rest of the cast. Go Peanut!
Thanks again, Sven!
I can’t wait until Saturday night rolls around each week. I stock up on hot tamales, chocolate cinnamon gummy bears, popcorn & soda. I then turn off the phones & lights in the house and watch Batman, Lost in Space, Star Trek and of course Svengoolie. I love the old black and white spook movies you put on. Reminds me of sitting up late on Saturday nights when I was very young watching scary movies with my Dad.
Sven, you put on excellent movies and you are one funny guy.
Could you put on the movie “Them” with the giant ants in the near future? That was a great movie.
Keep up the good work.
Jim.
Dr, Acula: Yes, that scene where the Mummy strangles the night watchman is a brutal one, since it looks like Lon Chaney, Jr. didn’t know his own strength. In the scene when the Mummy kills Professor Norman (Frank Reicher), Chaney went overboard, too, clutching the actor’s throat so strongly that Reicher had red welts around his neck and complained that Chaney was close to REALLY strangling him. I got the impression that Chaney was sipping quite liberally from his flask of “ice tea” (LOL) on the set of that movie, which may account for his over-the-top actions in both scenes.
Is there a way to find out what movies are going to be played in up coming weeks? My sons and i live in the Denver area and have been watching the show every Saturday night since we found it, but it seem like a lot of rerun shows lately and my boy’s are loosing interest.
Thanks, Dan Perkins.
Dale U. —thanks for your insights and background info!

The Mummy movies are the best of all the horror movies. Look how he comes back each time and when you listen to the back ground music when he is walking or stalking someone it’s very good. I wish Universal Studios would do another series of mummy movies without all the stupid humor and romance that he Brandon Frazier’s ones had- I wouldn’t even put them in the horror movie section. We need some one like John Carpenter to direct or write it- make it scary. Remember the first mummy movie with Boris Karloff when he came alive, some movie critics say that is one of the scariest movie scenes in Hollywood history. Hammer Films has a few mummy movies maybe Svengoolie can start and show them.
I’ll go against the grain and say it was “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” with Vincent Price… Okay, Okay… it WAS “Omega Man” with Charlton Heston… later retold as “I Am Legend” (the original title) with Will Smith. I wanna see “Solient Green”!!!
Although I DO love all of your movies, Sven, I HATE your contractual obligation to shown them repeatedly.
There are SO many good ones being ignored. “The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra” would be a PERFECT fit for your show.
Glenn, I agree “The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra” is hilarious, but being independently produced, it probably isn’t in any film package currently available to Sven’s show.
If you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend “Dark and Stormy Night,” an Old Dark House Mystery parody that the “Cadavra” folks also produced.
Did the 3 stooges ever do a monster movie like Abbott and Costello did?
Will there ever be a Svengoolie Model kit like the Elvira one?
I really enjoy your behind the scene facts you give on the movies you show..The Omega Man was an excellent flick. Its been redone, but never had the same flavor. Anthony Zerbe as Mathius was an excellent casting choice.
Lon Chaney such a great actor.
“The Omega Man” (1971) starring Charlton Heston was a remake of “The Last Man on Earth” (1964) starring Vincent Price. They were based on the novel “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson written in 1954. In 2007 “I am Legend” was made once again, this time starring Will Smith. I believe the Charlton Heston version is the one your viewer was asking about.
