Who’s on First? Who’s a Ghost? “Time of Their Lives” Tonight!

It’s a new Sven show tonight on MeTV- with Revolutionary War ghosts plaguing new tenants of a reconstructed manor. When one of the ghosts is Lou Costello, and one of the new residents is Bud Abbott- you know they’ll have the “Time of Their Lives”!
In 1780, an honest and good-hearted colonial tinker- Horatio- has a letter of recommendation from none other than General George Washington- which he hopes will convince wealthy Tom Danbury (to whom his girlfriend Nora is indentured) to make her a free woman- and marry him! Unfortunately, a sneaky butler, Cuthbert, would like to take Horatio’s place in Nora’s heart- and schemes to keep him from delivering the letter- not knowing that Nora has already taken it.
Things become more complicated when Nora overhears Danbury plotting to join Benedict Arnold and strike against the colonial army- but she is captured by Tom and his British sympathizers ! However, Tom’s fiancee Melody has also been eavesdropping- and, broken-heartedly decides to ride to tell the army what he’s planning, while unbeknownst to her,Tom hides Horatio’s letter in a clock. She accidentally stumbles on Horatio, and enlists him to ride with her. This does not end well- as they are mistaken for traitors and shot, with their bodies dumped into the estate’s well! Angry patriots carry away the estate’s furniture and burn the place to the ground.
Years pass- and , in the 1940s, the Danbury estate has been rebuilt- and restocked with the original furnishings!Horatio and Melody, now ghosts condemned to stay on the estate unless they are proved innocent of being traitors, see the new tenants arriving- young Sheldon Gage, his fiancee, her wise-cracking aunt, and Sheldon’s psychiatrist (note: it would appear the reason for his having a psychiatrist has edited out of the film – you can see a jump cut when they first arrive and talk about the psychiatrist coming!) As luck would have it- the shrink is a look-alike descendant of Horatio’s old nemesis Cuthbert! Horatio and Melody decide to use their ghostly powers to haunt the new occupants of the rebuilt manor- and scare all those in the house- except for the housekeeper Emily, who has a bit of the shining and knows that the spirits are about!
Seeing the old furniture back- Horatio and Melody search for the hidden letter that will free them- and Emily’s psychic power, put to use in a seance, may be the key to finding just where that all-important letter might be!
This 1946 ghost story features Lou (as Horatio) and Bud ( as Cuthbert and his descendant) as separate entities, not as a team- Lou is teamed up with the lovely Marjorie Reynolds as the two ghosts. We’ll talk about the stories of WHY the boys were not a team in this film (and the expert who disputes them), as well as giving background on the other players, including Gale Sondergaard and Binnie Barnes. Since this movie is a little longer than our average films shown, we’ll limit the Sven time so we don’t have to cut much from the movie.
“Time of Their Lives” appears tonight on MeTV at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 central, or check your local listings for time in your area. Be aware that some stations will shift our show to later due to sporting events, and many of them shift the start time so they can show you our entire program- instead of only part of it. In Chicago, WCIU viewers can see “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man” at 11 am!

Tonight’s movie is a different type of Abbott and Costello film, and my song parody is more melancholy than usual. I would like to dedicate the following to George Martin (1926-2016). His brilliant work as a record producer truly earned him the title of the fifth Beatle. It’s a song parody of the classic Beatles’ song “Eleanor Rigby” (#11 in 1966).

Good Morning, Everyone:
I used to think you could divide the film career of Abbott and Costello into two halves. The first would be the “In” films such as “In the Navy”, “In Society” or “In Hollywood”; where they were trying to get into something. The second half would be the “Meet” films which dealt with them meeting such luminaries as “Frankenstein”, “The Invisible Man” or “The Mummy”. However, there was a brief interval of about a year, between the two halves. And if this “interlude” hadn’t happened – maybe the second half would never have taken place.
The popular story is that a feud between two comedians occurred in 1945 after Costello fired a maid whom Abbott then hired. When Costello insisted that he (Abbott) fire her, he (Abbott, again) refused. Maybe it was the strain of making those 16 movies in 5 years, weekly radio shows and touring. Maybe something changed in the funny one after his infant Son drowned. But when falling box offices returns entered the picture – Universal decided to change the format – and give the funny one what he wanted.
Since Costello wanted to be Chaplin – and be dramatic – The Studio gave him “Little Giant” They let Abbott play dual roles hoping their audience wouldn’t notice how few scenes the two appeared in together. Their next film would be the last one released under the old regime.
The new regime (Now Universal International) felt the same way about the comedians the old one did – a necessary evil to be endured – only as long as they made money. Fortunately, a smart new Producer (Robert Arthur) who took the time to figure out what worked for them in the beginning, bring back their best screenwriters (Robert Lees and Frederick Rinaldo), and keep the Director they were now working well with (Charles Barton), was hired.
In the first year of the New Regime – and the last year of their contract – A sequel to their biggest hit (“Buck Privates”) and another film with Costello acting off a strong female performer with great comic timing (Marjorie Main) in “The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap” wound up being Universal’s 4th and 8th biggest money makers of 1947. The Team moved up to #17 at the Box Office and received another seven year contract which would take them to the end of their career(s) at Universal.
The tinkering process continued with Arthur looking at what made “Hold That Ghost” (nee “Oh, Charlie!”) successful. The result was: “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein”.
“The Time of Their Lives” was released within months of “Little Giant”. It’s the story of two colonials mistakenly shot as traitors, cursed to remain earthbound and the modern day people who help them prove their innocence and find peace. They are, of course, Costello, and as his partner in this film, Marjorie Reynolds (who is best remembered as William Bendix’ Wife in “The Life of Riley”). Once again Abbott is given dual roles but he in no way acts directly with his usual partner – which is what people are paying to see , Lou Costello playing at comedy unfettered by Bud Abbott. The result is a whimsical little film which actually leaves you feeling quite good by the end of it.

Shot and thrown down a well? Not exactly jolly times, eh? But enough spooks and enough comedy to keep us watching. Or so I read (haven’t seen this one before).
My satire comes from a film ten years earlier with another great acting team. ‘A Fine Romance’ was written by Dorothy Fields (words) and Jerome Kern (music) — can hardly get better than that! — and the movie of the same name starred Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Lots of other great pairs have recorded it.
It’s Bud and Lou — with no squabbles
With no routines, no hat wobbles
They’re both in love with Nora — oh, what confusion
Back in the days of America’s Revolution
Though Bud and Lou — won’t aid treason
The soldiers shoot — it’s spy season
“Horatio”‘s killed by Washington’s sniper crew
Melody gets it, too
What a strange Bud and Lou
Now Lou’s a ghost — no guy’s pluckier
But Lou and girl — are cursed, stuck here
No way to prove their innocence, what a fix
And now fast forward to 1946
When Lou sees Bud — Aha! Trick him!
For once it’s Bud — who’s Lou’s victim
That spooky Emily contacts the dead — oh Lud!
Now we’ll learn all the mud
What a strange Lou and Bud
It’s Bud and Lou — we all love ’em
Though scenes are few — with both of ’em
Who knew that Bud could do such character acting?
No great big music numbers (they’re just distracting)
Without the shtick — and no lame jokes

There’s great effects and Jack Pierce’s make-up too

Sven now regularly starts at 11:00pm on Me-TV Boston because they local added local news and Get Smart to the line up. I think they’ve made a grave error.

Bill K: Very insightful and well-written assessment of the changes in Abbott and Costello’s careers. Yes, by 1946, the team was no longer in the top 10 Box Office lists, and some changes (as well as welcome revisits) helped put them back in that esteemed company. I think their films from 1940-1945 are their best, but there are some real gems in what you call their “second stage,” as well (of course, A & C MEET FRANKENSTEIN!). They (especially Lou) displayed frenetic high energy during the 1940–1943 films in particular that they would never quite show again.
THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES has been called “An Abbott and Costello film for those who don’t like Abbott and Costello.” Unlike LITTLE GIANT, which has its moments, but which I think is ultimately too maudlin, TTOTL is brilliant!–a wonderful blend of humor and chills, not surprising since Charles Barton, who became the team’s favorite director, also helmed MEET FRANKENSTEIN. Lou shows great flair in his Chaplinesque role as Horatio, and Bud is very good as a psychiatrist who, because of the hauntings he experiences, wonders if HE needs a psychiatrist himself. It proved that the two men could do character comedy.
Thanks, Bill for your closing comment. You must have remembered how much I’ve sung this film’s praises in the past. There’s close competition from HOLD THAT GHOST and MEET FRANKENSTEIN, but TTOTL is, indeed, my favorite A & C movie. Thanks, Sven, for showing it. I guess it proves that, even though you’re no longer a disc jockey, you still take requests!
Mudd: Yes, George Martin’s passing away may have flown under some people’s radar, but he was instrumental (no pun intended) in the Beatles’ success. Good choice for a satire in tribute to Mr. Martin, with “Eleanor Rigby.”

Not a big fan of Abbot and Costello, although I do not mind them normally, but do not care for them as one of Svengoolies “scary” movies. Not to fear though, I have some other Sven shows on the DVR that I will watch in place. Everyone likes something different. Have fun watching Bud and Lou everyone!

It’s not shiny and new it’s old and dull but it still works!!! I’ve had it for a little over 25 years
Hail, Svengoolie! No, seriously, it’s raining here in MD with a little bit of snow and hail mixed in. Some Spring weather, huh? Looking forward to tonight’s movie. As I have said before, we’ve seen a lot of Bud and Lou, we’ve been working our way through the boxed set of the TV shows, and way before that one of the NYC stations used to run the movies AND the shows in the afternoons. Which is probably why I cannot actually place this one, I likely have seen this one partially, but not in full, as the movie would have started before I got home from school, and I usually had something else to do then. (I had a similar problem with “Dark Shadows”.) Mr Tygercat had a worse problem, he grew up on a farm, which means after school chores. Which means it will be refreshing to be able to just sit and enjoy the movie without having to get up to go wash dishes or feed the chickens or something.
Phibes- agree that the Boston station has made a grave error, especially with another, presumably rival station, within broadcasting range. We’ve had this situation with the Baltimore station for over a year now, and you would think that the ownership would wonder why the viewers suddenly jump ship to watch the Washington ME-TV affiliate at 10PM on Saturday. Hearst seems to be doing this with all it’s stations- think they’ll eventually figure it out?
Yvette: I feel your pain, gal. I also bought a new VCR (actually, it’s a VCR, DVR combo), so I never have to miss Svengoolie if I’m every out on a Saturday night. I’m not the most technologically adept person, so I had to have my cable company come out twice to hook it up to my cable box. I’m, too, still figuring out is intricacies, but hopefully it won’t be much longer. It’s also good to hear that there are others on this blog who still use VCRS and video tapes. Remember when you were always asked at video stores to rewind your tapes before returning them?

Just watched the famous Far o la fa lo lee scene again on TheU. Larry would make a great music critic. About the only thing that would make that scene better was after Larry goes ballistic and stops the music they pan over to the table behind him and it’s Willie from Jungle Woman and he says: “No more music? Awe, it’s a gyp!”
Or you can have a peeved Dr. Smith sitting next to Larry and he could yell: ” Silence! You singing simpleton!”
Then Frankie strolls into town and clears out the whole place. Was he attracted to the music? I thought Bela was the worst of the Universal Frankies but this scene when he comes in and causes the big panic is one of the best scenes in any Frankenstein movie.

Can we go off topic for a moment?
I posted last week that I was heading up to my old high school to assist at Career Day and talk to the Students about future choices they will be making. I went there yesterday and was given 3 classes to speak to.
The first and second classes were seniors. The first group was small and did not ask much of anything so I wasn’t sure how to proceed with the next two. The second group was louder and more boisterous so they gave me ideas and I gave pointers on how they should conduct themselves on job interviews.
My last group was a Junior Class. I had never mentioned what I do thinking it wouldn’t interest them. But when I told them I was a disability advocate who helped people get Medicaid and Social Security Disability their hands went shooting up and they started asking all sorts of questions: “What was the toughest interview I ever had?, “Did I ever interview a Schizo?”
One poor kid asked me how you handle someone with a split personality. Without pausing to think I replied: “One at a Time!” – and that really set them off.
I don’t do much “Giving Back to Community” type stuff but doing this made me feel quite good – and I will be going back next year!
Dale, Yvette- we are also still using VCRs to record, largely because there are a couple of channels (hello, National Geographic) that have some sort of copy protect on their signal so it won’t record on DVD. Unfortunately, VCRs, especially old ones, have a nasty habit of getting cranky and eating the tape, so we are always fixing (or, more accurately, trying to fix) one or another. We are trying to keep them going, as new VCRs, and even DVRs, are increasingly hard to find. I think last year or so Sven ran a letters segment about some guy using BETAMAX to record the show. Must be a very electronic-savvy fellow to still have it running!

I know exactly what you are talking about with how “Time of Their Lives” used to be shown on WOR-TV (Channel 9) in NYC back in those days. I don’t think it was ever shown on say “Million Dollar Movie” at 7:30 which would have been the 16 showings over the next 7 days or “Movie of the week at 4:30 pm which would have been shown daily for 5 consecutive business days starting with Tuesday.
The first time I saw this film I must have been 9 and it was on a Saturday at 12:30 pm. It was one of those movies WOR would show to kill time before the Mets Broadcast. I would have been out to play at that time, but I saw their (Abbott and Costello’s) names come up in the opening credits so I stayed to watch. It did not get the type of play most of their other films got. Even “Little Giant” got the “Million Dollar Movie Treatment”
“Who Done it” was another film of theirs that did not get shown a lot. I didn’t see it on TV until I was about 12 or 13. WOR – TV again, “The Big Preview” on Sunday nights at 8 pm and that was a single showing.

Any Abott and Costello movie is great. They played off one another so well. It’s a shame quality like this is rare today. So rack and stack the munchies, power up the VCRs(new and old), and kick back for ghostly Svennight.
Another option for those who want to record tv would be an Rca Digital Converter Box with DVR Recording. I saw them at walmart a few months ago. All you have to do is plug a flashdrive into them and you record onto that. I don’t have a need for one because I have a hard-drive recorder with a digital tuner. From what I’ve read it gets good reviews and only costs about 40 dollars. You just have to buy a flashdrive if you don’t already have a spare one.

We are having big storms here in SW FL, so my nap is being disrupted. I did get 1st AG today, as well as being the oldest female runner in the competition (I am scarcely willing to admit that). Svengoolie : This show sounds more complicates than simply whose on first, even though I’m still not sure whose on first either. Sounds like this letter is of great importance to the two characters who are bound to earth as spirits, and how interesting Bud and Lou will not work as a team. This show sounds serious the way you wrote it above, so we’ll see what humor is in it?
Rewatched last weeks movie and it’s a good thing I saw the actual movie many times before because I missed much of your extras yelling at the ceiling, I think letting off anxiety of starting work maybe, and just got my voice mostly back after a full week after sounding like a cross between a boy going thru puberty and the Godfather, ha.
The first scene where the grave robbers break into the mausoleum was a great intro, and even though it didn’t have a transformation scene and Lon got a break from the make-up chair, was very creepy the simple way the mere arm shoots up and grabs the older thief with his pal running off. something newer movies don’t do anymore, scare you with just suspense.
Loved the picture puzzle with the Launch, knee, June , year as Lon Chaney Jr. I always like your drawings and got that one sooner than usual which is when you blow it and give the answer.
Loved the, Just for Wolfman ad, where you took different scenes from the movie with the lines ” die ” dye, and especially the ” grab copper ” part with Wolfman grabbing the cop from behind, haha. Noticed Doug Graves before the song mentioned the term vasectomy in a joke , and I will add a vasectomy is the only operation I personally have gone thru in my 40 years of life and was the best 10 dollars I ever spent!! Liked the end of your song also where Wolfman falls into depths of the castle at the start, and you had the lines of, dropped in.
last thing I’ll mention about the movie is that even though this was my favorite of the ” meets ” or VS movies, did see an inconsistent theme with the character Frank. He seemed like a normal , well spoken younger man, and looked very sane compared to Larry when first shown after the gypsy song, but then in the end all of a sudden feels he should give the monster full power? He like turns into a mad scientist all of a sudden, and think maybe that’s what happens when you put those scientist outfits on, and maybe he had the name Frank like the monster? Haha, that’s all I could come up with? He does flip to being normal again very soon after the castle is in danger and has a women to save though, and I also love how there’s always some switch like that which can cause self destruction , ” don’t touch that switch! ” Think I see now why those self destruction switches went out of style…
Phibes : Who won that fight in the end anyway before the waters swept the castle? I had Frankenstein by far, he had much longer reach , was throwing Wolfman around like a doll, and even hid in that corner before making a final pounce. Don’t doubt Sven about the two stunt doubles, but couldn’t really tell much.

Bill K- never could quite figure out just why they called it “Million Dollar Movie”, when most of the ones they showed were not exactly blockbusters. I think they showed a single movie so much to mimic the way movie theatres would show them, one movie a week, several times over. And for the theme music- (“Tara’s Theme” from “Gone With the Wind”, for those of you who didn’t live in the NYC area)- that must have cost them, to get the rights to it. I should be ashamed to admit this, but the first time I saw “GWTW” I was in college and was startled to see this great movie start up with what I knew as the theme to “Million Dollar Movie”!
I still watch my old and new tapes but were can you get a new Rewinder these days?
Never understood these fat old guys as master gunfighters on these shows.

Billl K: WHO DONE IT? is another great Abbott and Costello film from their 1940-1943 “Golden Period.” Jim Mullholland, author of THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO BOOK, claims it’s as good a mystery-comedy as HOLD THAT GHOST, and I really agree!
That movie has a funny in-joke where Costello wins a radio at a contest. When he turns it on, he hears Abbott and himself in the middle of their “Who’s on First?” routine. He then turns it off, complaining, “It’s the same old thing with those two guys: ‘Who’s on first? ‘What’s on second?’ Wheeeee!”
A few things. Please folks, out of courtesy to Sven, hold off on large doses of trivia about the presentation till after the show. His insight is the reason a LOT of us watch.
Also, just how many ‘fifth’ Beatles are there ? Pete Best, Stuart Sutcliffe, Jimmy Nicol, Brian Epstein, George Martin. Some even credit Ed Sullivan as one. Sorry for straying off topic, just grasping onto a previous post.

Hi Sam, Dale, Tygercat, Joel w – if I can’t get this BCR to work, then I’ll be running back-and-forth watching NYPD Blue on one TV and Sven on another. Hey Gang, just a quick check in. Want to make I’m accounted for, for payroll purposes. Roller coaster day today. Went to a funeral this morning. Then this afternoon I picked up an old friend who used to live here, and we went to visit another friend. First time she had gotten to see either of us in a couple of years.
Now I need to get to the grocery store and get home before Super Sci-Fi Saturday Night begins. I can remember bits and pieces of this one, but it has been years, so will basically like watching a new movie.

I never thought I would be recording shows with my VCR, so I got rid of hundreds and hundreds of tapes. Had a lot that were used for recording security cameras. Now I’am recording over Dora and Sponge Bob, sorry SB, and the wife’s figure stating tapes I’m ripping of the labels to hide the evidence.
HELP! Where’s Keith when I need him? But this is for anyone out there who knows what I’m doing wrong. I can play a pre-recorded which comes in just fine but can’t record. VCRs on channel 4 & I tried it on channel 3 and all I tape is dead air when I put the TV on the channel I want to tape. Also I went to auto set up on the VCR, it went through all the channels but when I try to do a time to recording it wouldn’t let me put in any other channels except channel 2 or L1, Weird! I give up, don’t know what I’m doing.

I would love it if Sven/Rich could get “Who Done It?”. To me, it is A & C at their peak. Very rich film, well mounted, great supporting cast, no music and the romantic element is kept to a minimum. I know I’ve said this before but despite its’ haunted house trappings, “Hold That Ghost” has no “Ghost” in it. “Who Done It?” has the trappings of a classic Murder Mystery with a good portion of the film taking place in a darkened radio station at night.
I don’t know if you noticed it out there as you were growing up, but in NYC this particular A & C film did not get the play that the previous 6 ( I am excluding “A Night in the Tropics” and “Rio Rita” which also did not get shown that often) and started being shown on TV much later.

This Pat’s husband again . I first saw this A&C film on channel 7 in San Francisco when I was a teenager on show called “The Mad Mad Movie”, which is good name for this kind of a show. the host warned us that this was a different kind of A&C movie .Some of my friends didn’t like it and thought it was dumb. But I thought was different and I wondered what would have happened if the boys had moved more in this direction. I suggested this one to Sven a while back and I am glad he is going to show it Enjoy everybody and we can discuss it after.

What a fun scene on Super Man where the tribesman are dancing around but then the group stops, and the one guy keeps dancing around like a jerk to the point it was comical. Then the blast and Super Man takes care of business. Btw people, on that voting it had Super Man vs Batman, and I went with Superman. This is a wonderful conclusion to the first Penguin episode (two parts). Burgess Meredith, right from the start, showed why he was able to make the villain such a great character. I also thought it was interesting how this episode has both Penguin and his co-horts referring to Batman as “the Batman,” which is more in line with the Dark Knight interpretation of the character. At the end of this episode, Commissioner Gordon talks about how Batman devised the bat as a perfect symbol to strike fear into criminals’ hearts.
On the whole, the first season’s eisdoes of BATMAN were the best–campy yet, but still preserving some suspense and menace. The show got even campier (and even sillier) starting with the second season–still fun, but more inconsistent in quality One avid Batman fan, who has an online site devoted to the series, felt this change in approach reflected a change in the writers. During the first season, the humor came from the way in which deadly serious comic book stories were exaggerated; we were asked, he felt, to “laugh WITH the show.” Starting with the second season, the writers, he felt, were aiming more for flat-out-comedy, with the result that we were now being asked to “laugh AT the show,” which, he felt, was a more challenging task. Yes, Max, why the Robinsons and Major West didn’t get rid of Dr. Smith from the start is one of the great unanswered mysteries of the universe. Still, if they had, we’d be without one of the most memorable cowardly, conniving, but still oddly loveable characters in ’60s TV history.

I always thought the Star Trek franchise lost out when it did not make a movie of an all out war between the Federation and Klingon empire. Star Wars beat them out on this. From what I know, battle episodes on the original Star Trek as well as the return of Kahn movie were fan favorites. Any thoughts on this?

Two things that never occurred to me before on this ep of LIS:
(1) Daniel J Travanti (yes, that was him as the leader of the space biker hippies) seems to be playing a latter-day version of Harvey Lembeck’s “Count Eric Von Zipper” biker from the Frankie & Annette beach movies.
(2) Dr Smith’s declaration “I am Smith the Mighty! Smith, the Strongest Man in the Universe!” may have inspired Toby Huss’s intro on “The Adventures of Pete and Pete” as “Artie, the strongest man…in the WORLD!”
(Note that the first time we saw the Robot this week, he was singing.)

I’m soooo glad Sven managed to get the rights to THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES. Despite what Billy from NY said, this is an excellent A & C movie–both funny and spooky, something different and more imaginative from the team at that stage of their career. Keith once told me about how touching he found that final scene where Horatio finally makes it to the Golden Gates–and it is, until the closing gag, that it’s closed that day for Washington’s birthday!–“Odds bodkins! ”
A little trivia note: Those spoil-sport bluenoses at the Breen censorship office wanted Universal to make sure that Melody’s shimmying when materializing or dematerializing would not seem sexually provocative! Gee, I wonder what they would have said about Elvis’ swivel hips if he had started his career at this time? On the other hand, they didn’t say anything about that satin white blouse and riding pants she was wearing (I thought she looked great in those!), nor about the idea of a single man and a woman (even if they were ghosts) living together (sharing the same tree!) for close to two hundred years. Was their relationship purely platonic during all that time? I suppose, although that scene where Melody wants romantic attention from Horatio, who only wants her to scratch his back, suggests to me that, even as a ghost, she retained her naturally human sexual impulses. When they would surface, what could she do? Her beloved Tom was no longer around, so Horatio would have to do! Hey, I’d feel her pain. That would be a long time without getting any (“Oh, you dirty bird!”).
Oh, Max: Yes, at the end of “The Amazing Mr. Dingle” T Z episode, the aliens take away his strength, but a couple of more aliens (from a different planet) show up and give him, instead, super intelligence–he’s now a genius!
Also, here’s a movie I’m sure you’d really enjoy: A well-made 1958 chiller starring HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL’s Richard Boone. It’s called I BURY THE LIVING. This film’s about a cemetery caretaker who comes across a supernatural map that gives him the ability to predict (and cause) his enemies’ deaths, thus creating, as a side “benefit,” more business for his place of employment. Have you ever though of something like that? With that map, you’d probably never have to worry about layoffs again! (LOL)
My Friends: It is my very unpleasant duty to advise you that our hero Svengoolie has been eliminated from the MeMadness brackets, and with him, Zallman. My mission now is to see M*A*S*H eliminated as soon as possible. (Please pardon my editorializing.) Oh well, there’s always next year.
Morning, everyone, really enjoyed last night’s showing. I was correct, I had never seen this movie before, and it has been a really long time for my husband (like 40+ years). Really don’t understand why it doesn’t get played more often, maybe the fact the Bub and Lou aren’t partners? Anyway, fun movie that contributes (sort of) to the ghost mythos- such as dematerializing by doing the hippy hippy shake. Some fun in jokes in here, like the one about the housekeeper being in “Rebecca”. Some historical issues, such as the zippers down the backs of the “colonial” dresses (ok, that is always a sore point for me), and some fast and loose history in general, but still a fun movie and we’re glad Sven ran it.
Also loved the “Horati-os” commercial and the “soap opera”. Nice touch with that being a radio drama.
Very disappointed with Sven missing his bracket. It’s a gyp! Wait til next year!
Arggh, that should be “Bud and Lou”, not “the Bub and Lou”. That sounds like a 70s sitcom. One of these days I will learn to type…
Fun movie last night. Not a major scare but enjoyable. Tried to watch LIS but space bikers ?? I still chuckle at myself today because LIS was my absolute favorite Sci Fi show as a child.
The Invisible Man next week. A week away and I can already hear Una O’Conner (hope I got that right ) as the cackling inn keepers wife screaming her head off.
Just as a little follow-up to my previous post, Horatio’s and Melody’s predicament reminded me of the title of a really BAD 1990s fantasy-comedy starring Anthony Quinn and Bo Derek (and, in a supporting role, Julie Newmar). It was called GHOSTS CAN’T DO IT.
Oh, if you listen closely to the radio crime show that Horatio and Melody accidentally turn on, that’s Donald MacBride’s voice as the gang boss interrogating the “phantom” and his girlfriend: “Okay, phantom, we want to know who tipped you off. Start singin’!” And when the police arrive as part of the show, and the boss says, “Everybody blow!” (followed by the two ghosts taking him literally and blowing away, as if they were trying to cool off a plate of hot food), I’m surprised nobody on the blog decided to make a dirty joke about that! Of course, as you know from my previous blogs, my mind is as pure as the driven snow, and I would never think of anything like that–wanna bet? (LOL)!
Matt. You are a ME TV animal ! One of the last off the blog at night watching it ,then checking back in the morning and you are up watching the early shows. Do you watch The Green Screen show also ?
I watched a few minutes of it one time. From what I got out of it, its about a bunch of young people sitting around tripping on acid. Surprised ME TV would be part of something like that
DALE: Regarding LIS, I agree. Sometimes it’s so bad that it’s literally unwatchable for me. The guest visitor/villain of the week and especially their costumes are so lame as to seem intentionally bad. Bad for bad’s sake, so to speak. They make some of the aliens on Star Trek look believable. BUT, what saves it for me every time is Dr. Smith and the Robot. Jonathan Harris was THE GREATEST! Hilarious to see him acting so butch with muscle padding under his costume and with the booming voice in last night’s episode after being changed into the green curly haired strongman (you had to see it to understand). I have read that the other adults in the cast were very jealous of he and the Robot getting the lion’s share of the scenes, the lines and the attention in general. Billy Mumy did like him, though, and I suppose Marta and Angela did, as well. Also, Harris was given carte blanche to write his own lines and ad lib at will. The “Oh dear!” and “The pain!” were his creations. Well, guess what- he deserved eveything he got. If the Harris haters wanted to be treated as he was, they should have been as brilliant as he was. For the second time in a week, I’m using the word “iconic”, but can anyone credibly argue that Dr. Smith was not?
Correction: I addressed my Lost In Space post to Dale. It should have been addressed to Mike. “My mistacky”, as Moe said in the Stooges short with Nacky, Saki and Wacky.
Dale — I read the first half of your new short story to my visiting nephews and nieces last night. Their faces were priceless. Wish I had done this before blowing $900 taking them to SeaWorld, Six Flags and Chuck E. Cheese’s.
Ahoy mates! Was it plainly obvious or did it just slip past the average moviegoer? In the closing scene, where does Melody go when she says goodbye to Horatio outside the manor gates? Horatio steps into the light coming from the sky and she walks away into the darkness.
Lord Danbury must have been sent to Perdition to pay for his crimes against the colonists. I’m assuming this, but it does seem a logical excuse for why the ghosts did not leave together for Heaven. It does make for the perfect ending with the Pearly Gates locked for the Washington holiday, leaving us with Odds Botkins! I would have filmed an alternate ending, where Melody would have found the Gates of Hell, closed for Hitler’s Birthday. After all, it was now 1946. This version shown exclusively at VFW Halls.
Is it just me, or did the new Sven commercial for the show have Sven doing a Dr Smith imitation? “Oh, the pain”!

Back to normal in MD, raking up leaves and branches after our last bout with high winds, cold temperatures and before our next brush with approx 2 – 4 inches of snow which should then be gone over the following two days.
Just for the fun of it, I went in and read the NY Times review of last nights’ film. Most of it is nothing that we bloggers hadn’t already caught. I won’t be posting any of it. So if you want to, you can check it for yourselves. They have a current day summation and review and then a link to the original November 28, 1946 review by Bosley Crowther.
What I found interesting is that it is a review of two films which opened around the same time ( the other being Disney’s “Song of the South”) and which offer some form of special effects / animation combined with live action.
Penngino, I wouldn’t classify myself as a Dr. Smith hater but I would have liked to see some more diverse plots involving the whole family. The first season shows were definitely the best for me. Then , regardless of Dr. Smith’s episodes, the plots really became campy.

Mike: You nailed it. “Campy”. When I referred to the haters, I meant his co-stars who came to dislike him, as his character more and more eclipsed theirs. I guess I like it for the wrong reasons. I saw it as almost a tongue-in-cheek full blown comedy, due to Dr. Smith and his Robot antagonist (or vice versa). The first season shows were actually good, I agree. Dr. Smith began as a legitimate villain when he first arrived. He morphed his character into the outrageous and loveable scene stealer later. The show slipped into the nonsensical after that, much as Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea did. The difference was, LIS was equally entertaining as a silly show. A fine actor like Richard Basehart deserved much better scripts after the first season of VTTBOTS, which simply degenerated into lame monster-of-the-week format, in my humble opinion. Still, they’re all part of our beloved MeTV, and the all have the charm of grand old nostalgia now.
P.S. Like the Nomad robot of Star Trek, I made one error in misdirecting my post, and then compounded my error in the correction by misspelling Sake as “Saki”. Oh, the pain! (And the shame.)

(Horatio and Melody standing in the ether, the Gates of Heaven in the distance – and hearing the Voice of Tom calling her. Melody starts towards his voice with Horatio following. A reddish hue starts and intensifies as his voice gets closer. The two stop before a Gate which says “Welcome To Hell – Open 24 hours” (or insert your gag here).
Melody: (Putting her hands on her hips and becoming more incensed with dawning comprehension as to where her swain is spending his eternity) “This is Hell! Well, I’ll be d………!”
Horatio: (Putting his hand up to her mouth) “Don’t say it, Miss Melody – (looking straight at the camera) This is a family film!”
(fade out)
or
Melody: “This is Hell! Well, I’ll be damned!”
Horatio: (putting his hand to the side of his mouth so Melody
can’t see that he is speaking and turning towards the

But being the staunch Roman Catholic I am, I’ve got to figure that since Danbury’s attempt at overthrow didn’t succeed, lost everything that he had, spent his whole life regretting his role in Melody and Horatio’s deaths and providing them with help in obtaining the proof of their innocence – he probably wound up in Purgatory and not Perdition. Melody and Horatio’s entrance into the Kingdom will probably get him exonerated as well.
Hey all, hope your first day of Spring is warmer than mine. We may have some snow flurries tonight. Not that long ago we had temps into the 80s.
I did enjoy the movie last night. Not our usual fare, but a fun little film anyhow.
One thing I did notice on Star Trek last night (as many times as I saw that episode) is Dr. McCoy doesn’t make an appearance. Scotty doesn’t either, but there are many episodes when someone, or multiple someones, from the secondary cast are not present. Of course, he wasn’t in the first episode either (Paul Fixx, I believe, was the ship’s doctor for that one).
Good questions about Tom’s ultimate fate and where Melody was ultimately walking towards in following his beckoning voice. My take is that it was an alternative entrance to heaven, and that Horatio took the more conventional path towards the Pearly Gates.
The UNIVERSAL HORROR authors largely praise the film, but feel that the second half, where Dr. Greenway steals the clock by placing it under his overcoat, followed by the wild ride he takes with Horatio at the wheel, seemed too different in tone and substance from the rest of the movie, a minor quibble, in my opinion.
Keith: Thanks for sharing for some of my new story with your nieces and nephews. I assume you omitted, in your reading, some of the less-than-family-friendly language and content that occasionally appears, but which are essential to the plot.
Mike and Penngino: I agree that Dr. Smith became a cult TV icon, and deservedly so. Jonathan Harris felt that a totally villainous Smith would eventually have to be killed off, so it was he who lobbied for making the character more loveable, and it worked. I also agree that the show’s whole approach, starting with the second season, became very campy and silly, due to the desire to reach a wider family audience.
Dale : I do remember that now that you mention it about the different aliens with the super intelligence, was a fun episode especially when he shows off to people. I only weigh like 160 and use to be able to Deadlift 400, and I didn’t need any aliens help , ha. That weight was too much for me though, and still lift heavy but concentrate more on form and less on the amount of weight.
I have seen I Bury the Living and that was a strange movie, it was on a DVD with other movies like that. Suppose with that many funerals they would need more help, but not into putting people there before there time, ha. During the season here, too many funerals can set back other work anyway. Your waiting for a funeral after setting everything up as the grass grows.
Penngino : That sucks about Sven and still can’t believe that! Can’t believe TZ beat him? Was doing the voting but our connection has been bad for awhile and so just voted on a few and will try again later, but did see TZ and thought that was odd and then saw your comment. The Sven team should have been number one!
also agree with you about Harris. I respect Mikes opinion and he’s right that it was a ridicules episode, but the silliness makes me watch it, even though the first season was totally different and done better as we’ve discussed here before. Think Smith looked like Samson on Saint Patricks Day, little master? His hair did crack me up and his tough guy attitude, but then he’d be unconscious and pop back in as Smith the coward.

Interesting movie and despite you telling the plot and seeing no comedy there, the actual movie was funny and some sound effects sounded close if not exactly like the Stooges to me, like the pitchfork sticking sound. When the soldiers were at the grave or the ” 2 traitors ” it almost sounded like the leader put a curse on them by the way he talked to me.
Real funny part where Horatio can’t turn invisible and then messes with Buds character by whisling loud and then finally pulling the chair out from under him. Also noticed that dog had a real funny cry or whine when Horatio does turn visible again later, did anyone else notice that funny sound from the dog? Also great in the ending where they must learn how to drive car by saying something like, ” they did this, and then they did that,” and off they went. now that was a driverless car, and not one controlled by a business but with ghost power! I did like the Closed for Washingtons B – day, and can see Keith’s point about the time period and Hitler, but think it was more ironic with Washington with the letter and all.
Funny breakfest commercial of yours with , Horati O’s too! Also your joke that he was her ” tinker toy ” . Interesting that the not getting along thing wasn’t true according to female relative that you mentioned, but I’m sure all teams and such go thru their trials.

About last nights movie, I have to agree with Dell that I thought Melody took a different path to heaven then Horatio. Also wondered why her beloved Tom was still her beloved and why she didn’t hate him and why did he end up in heaven apparently and not hell. Maybe he was given a second chance because he helped his beloved Melody and Horatio and repented for his sins.
As someone mentioned earlier, I don’t understand why this hasn’t been shown before, possibly because Sven couldn’t get it. This was a thoroughly enjoyable A&C movie which I enjoyed immensely and I’m not a big A&C fan.
One last dang, sorry to hear Sven didn’t make it in the brackets even though we all voted for him, not to worry he’ll still get the Rondo.

Interesting thoughts as to “do ghosts do it?” — the film was inconsistent in its “rules” for its ghosts. The first time Horatio tries to slap Melody on the shoulder, his hand goes right through her. Later, though, she’s cuddling on his shoulder without a fall-through. And if a ghost can walk through a door or wall, how can he/she pick up a solid object? The movie GHOST seemed to imply that it just took practice. And THE INVISIBLE MAN (as we’ll see) gets quite detailed with the difference between visibility and material presence. (Not sure if the book and movie correspond.)
I guess Horatio’s and Melody’s clothing was immortal as well. Over 166 years without a stain or tear?

yvette, when they read from Tom’s memoirs, he confessed that he was truly sorry for his actions against America and all of the pain, suffering and sorrow that he caused. When Melody heard that, she forgave him. But yeah, she just kind of ran off screen when her spirit was released, and Horatio had to climb to Heaven.

Just got back from watching #10 Cloverfield Lane. No spoilers. Entertaining flick that will keep guessing for the first 3/4 of the movie. The ending you will either love or hate but we enjoyed it. On my Bradometer , I give it 8 Brads.

I’m not a big Abbot and Costello fan, but liked this movie. I agree re Sven’s warning at the one part; as funny/light hearted as the movie was that scene was oddly out of place.

Anne Gillis, who played Nora, was 19 at the time this film was made. Probably her most famous role was Becky Thatcher in the 1938 technicolor version of “Tom Sawyer” . It was a David Selznick Production and the last film he worked on prior to turning his attention to “Gone With The Wind”.

Billy — INVISIBLE MAN was last seen (or unseen) on 7/11/15. And hadn’t been on for a year previous. I know because I keep records of all my satires, and I started weekly posting back in June 2014. Likewise, BLACK CAT(1941) on 9/20/14 and BLACK CAT (1934) 11/29/14 and not since. Soooo… Fact Check says False.
Your suggestions are good, though! Sven would have to be the one to explain his contract details. Certainly there are some Universal films he hasn’t shown in these two years. As well as others (e.g. Hammer) that he can get rights to — especially if a number of us clamor for them.
As you note, you’ve been watching a long time — so, yeah, there’s a feeling of “What, again?” when a ‘chestnut’ like INVISIBLE MAN comes around. Sven pointed out in an interview, we have some young viewers and new viewers who have never seen the rock-solid classics, maybe don’t even know who Claude Rains and Lon Chaney Jr. are. He wants to reach out to them, to keep the interest going.
And no matter what Sven shows, *some* of us will find it, uh, not to our taste. Boring, trivial, goofy, grisly, cheesy — whatever. Our TV’s have on-off switches, right? Or you can watch it for the shtick, or figure how you’d re-cast it or re-write it.
Remember the Gordon Lightfoot song titled “If you could read my mind?” The song has a line about a “..ghost from a wishin’ well.” According to Songfacts.com contributor Bill Walker’s comment, he once asked Lightfoot whether he was thinking of this movie when he wrote this song. Holly from DE: My earliest musical influences were probably prenatal. Everyone in my family played instruments and sang. I used to watch Lawrence Welk with my grandparents. Our family went to a “family camp” where the song leader played accordion. I started taking lessons in my teens. Then discovered folk dance in college — and found accordion fits just about every style (maybe not Greek). Also had the good fortune to go to Finland several times, where accordion bands play everything from Bach to ballroom, folk, jazz, experimental modern compositions… Now I mainly play French cabaret, though I’m open to other styles. I’m lucky I can learn fast and store tunes in my head.
Maybe a future Big Blog-Cast can go to a New Wine Festival and I’ll accompany us singing Faro-La Faro-Li!

Billy from NYC buy the Horror pack for 20bucks.Got every movie you mentioned. They have a couple different ones even.
The movie had more (and better) special effects than I expected. As Sven explained this did not help with the budget, but it sure made the film even more entertaining. My favorite effect was when Horatio got stuck in the window sill.
I thought the movie was well paced and well directed. As Dale mentioned Charles Barton also directed A&C Meet Frankenstein and several other A&C films. Barton also worked in TV sitcoms, directing every episode of Amos & Andy and the majority of Family Affair.
I especially liked the direction of the scene at midnight, with several interestingly composed shots from around the house during the twelve strikes of the clock. It could have been gimmicky, but each of the brief shots seemed well-thought-out.
When Horatio gave Greenway “the boot”, just after Abbott turned his back to Lou there was a quick cut which allowed a stuntman to step in for Bud and take the tumble.
Dr. Greenway reminded me in some ways of Dr. Bellows in I Dream of Jeannie. The psychiatrist who thought everyone was crazy, but then began to doubt his own sanity after seeing and hearing unexplainable phenomenon.
Sven mentioned that Marjorie Reynolds later starred in The Life of Riley with William Bendix. Coincidentally, two years after Reynolds appeared in The Time of Their Lives, Bendix was in a film titled The Time of Your Life, a drama starring Jimmy Cagney. A later TV remake of The Time of Your Life starred Jackie Gleason, who for those keeping score preceded William Bendix as the star of The Life of Riley! (if you need a diagram of all this please send a stamped self-addressed envelope)
In case you didn’t notice, Horati-Os! cereal was manufactured by General Washington (playing on General Mills being the maker of Cheerios). The box even had a stylized GW imitating the stylized G on General Mills products.
Rules for ghosts – yeah I think it mostly had to do with control. They could pass through doors, or else open them normally using the doorknob. And pick up objects (and throw them). They could be heard or not heard, although since they apparently weren’t very good at it, a mortal usually had to be spiritually sensitive to hear them (Dale, apparently the stethoscope helped amplify Horatio’s ghostly voice!) I am guessing that they could have been visible also except they hadn’t learned that trick, something which probably took even more effort than being audible.
They could fall or float. They could feel the effects of electricity, from Horatio’s reaction it was either mildly painful or perhaps just disconcerting. And somehow Horatio was able to store an electric charge and light up the cold cathode fluorescent tube that he picked up.
In the scene where the gangster on the radio tells everyone to blow, just prior to that he tells them to sing. Horatio starts singing the old English song “Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes”. He stutters as he forgets a word, which Melody helps him with “Pledge”. Towards the end of the movie when Lt. Mason holds them at gunpoint, Horatio, (who by the way seemed quite nauseous) begins singing “Drink to me only with thine eyes, and I will …” stumbling again at the same place in the song. Melody again prompts him “Pledge, pledge”. That was funny. Unfortunately some confusing dialogue is heard next. Apparently Greenway says something about “blow” and Horatio starts blowing again like he and Melody did in the earlier scene. But it’s hard to hear exactly what Greenway said however because he had his back to the camera so you couldn’t see his lips, and also Lt. Mason is simultaneously saying to Greenway “It would have been cheaper of you to have bought a watch”. It sounded looped and just didn’t work for some reason.
Regarding the ending, I don’t think of it as a different “destination”, I just assumed that the intent was to show that after their great adventure together Melody and Horatio were now going their separate ways, whereas up until then we thought they might wind up as a couple. It reminded me in some ways of the film Lost in Translation with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, both of them away from home and separated from their spouses, they became great friends and had an amazing (and platonic) time together, but in the end they realized that they needed to return to their original partner.
I think it’s nice to imagine Horatio, Nora, Melody and Tom all having dinner together as Horatio suggested.

Ive had a flood of new ch’s over my 30ft antenna! Comet,grit,get,this,antenna,retro, bounce,laff and the best one METV! But i cant watch Tiger Baseball without cable! so they got me wanting a sat dish.

I know a lot of you are frustrated with Sven not getting far in the ME TV countdown but you need to understand he’s not exactly playing on a level field. A lot of the ME TV shows were aired nationwide while Svengoolie was only in specific markets. I hadn’t even heard of Sven until moving to NC five years back. Speaking for myself and maybe Dale, Ghoulardi was my late nite horror entertainment and now Svengoolie has taken over that role.

One nice thing about Sven’s selections is they are movies the whole family can watch together. Not only from comments on the blog but also from the letters and photos people send in you can tell this is really important to people, nowadays people value anything that you can do together as a family. I think Sven is quite conscious of that, and as he did Saturday he lets everyone know if an upcoming scene may disturb sensitive viewers.
I also know that every time he shows a movie we hear people saying they haven’t seen it before, even if was on just a few months ago (and lately much longer than that). It’s fun to “watch it with them” and see what they think about it, or vice-versa like this movie, getting nuggets from people who have seen it before when I haven’t. Meanwhile I have yet to watch a repeat showing on Sven that I don’t see something I missed before. And the Sven material, is alway great including those bits shot in front of the old coffin.
There’s plenty of modern gore available nowadays only a remote press or a mouse click away. But you won’t find this unique combination of classic horror movies and humour anywhere else.

Billy- “The Black Cat” has NOT been on three times this year. Nor is “invisible Man” the 3rd time in the past year.In fact it hasn’t even been on once.I’ll say it Once again- we have 52 different movies this year- any movie only runs once in the calendar year. Yes, we may have shown some in a previous year.I’ve explained our contract situation with Universal any number of times, and also mentioned that it’s very competitive as far as us getting other movies, due to other cable nets- but we are working on it. We don’t show some of the movies like “Gila Monster” because the print we have is not of good enough quality for the current digital TVs. When we are allowed the production time, we add new segments to old shows. And, honestly, if people want to complain about a classic film being shown once every year, they are welcome to their opinion. There’s a lot about getting movies that people outside the business don’t know.

Sven- some people just gotta complain. The rest of us wouldn’t mind some newer movies, but I for one am quite happy to see these old favorites, every time they run I see something else I didn’t see before. As someone who can “name that Trek episode” from the first few seconds, I have no issue with the repeats. As far as the broadcast quality- here we are getting a local access channel that runs old movies that probably aren’t “broadcast quality” even under non-digital standards. It’s terrible. Some of them are old silent movies that should have been preserved but haven’t been. Believe me, we appreciate a good clear copy! Please keep it up, we appreciate it!
Mr. Cheesesteak, I only pointed out that nowadays content of all type is readily available, not sure why you read that as telling you what to watch, sorry if you took it that way.
I’m all for the Philadelphia way, Sven is nationwide now and the number of “newbies ” now far exceeds the number of veterans. Wouldn’t be very democrstic now would it to tell the majority to step aside and let the aristocratic class run things. But even in minority you certainly have a right to express your opinion, I don’t see where anyone here says you don’t so not sure either why that is a concern.
Moot point anyway as this isn’t a voting process. A commercial company is providing at their expense program content owned by other private companies, free of charge, paid for by advertisers willing to pay based on ratings. That being said I don’t think it’s just about ratings, unlike some other networks Sven seems to have always worked hard to select films that he thinks his viewers will enjoy, factoring in the limitations that he has to work with, as he has explained many times before including just now. I for one appreciate all that he does. And no I’m not saying that you don’t

Svengoolie : Glad you addressed that and it was what I was thinking too. I remember what you said about how often you play your movies and also that it’s not easy to get new movies with the competition . I’m of course not in your business , but as time has gone by you have educated me on it a lot more. I’d like to see a lot of different movies but most would be too graphic in different ways for TV. Blackula is one that wouldn’t be too graphic, but it’s not like you buy a copy and play it on TV with wise cracks, history, and games.

Mike: As far as the local OH horror film hosts, I have some fuzzy memories of Ghoulardi. (I was only about six years old at the time), but I have clearer memories of The Ghoul, Big Chuck and Hoolihan (and later, Little John), and Superhost. On Saturday nights, when the weather was just right (remember those rabbit ear antennas), I would even catch Chilly Billy Cardille on Pittsburgh’s Chiller Theater in the ’70s. He would have a double feature (often featuring the Universal horror classics), until being cut back to one movie in 1976, due to Channel 11, an NBC affiliate, beginning to air SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.
Maybe Sam, who lives close to Columbus, might remember a Friday late night horror show host called The Night Owl. Like “Chilly Billy,” he had a double-feature movie show.
We had Bob Wilkens(Creature Features ),Joe Bob Briggs, Rhonda (UP all night )Gilbert and the Queen…….. ELVIRA! I did get to see the original Svengoolie(in town) and did later be privileged to see Our beloved Svengoolie.

Did anyone see the episode of the “Garfunkel & Oates” TV show where an old friend who was deluded enough to think she was once part of the group came back for a visit? Kept talking about how it used to be “Garfunkel & Oates & Jazzy Jeff”.
The ultimate example of this “non-member of a group who’s really an undocumented member” has to be Kate Smith, who started calling herself “The FIrst Lady of Radio” full in the face of Vaughn De Leath, who’d been using the same expression for years. She gave up the title after being sued in 1931, but picked it right back up when De Leath died twelve years later.
(De Leath recorded, in 1927, the version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight” that anyone with functioning ears can tell inspired Elvis’s cover thirty years later.)

Dale, you and I are no doubt very close in age. I was very young watching Ghoulardi towards his final years as well. Many more distinctive memories with The Ghoul and Hooligan and Big Chuck. Superhost as well. Remember The Night Owl name but don’t think I ever watched. Wish I still had my vintage Ghoul sweatshirt. Me and a friend had a kielbasy (sp) party in 7th grade at his house. I remember most of the other kids had no clue why my friends mother was serving up kielbasy. Remember Big Chuck as The Kielbasy Kid ? One of my favs. Oh , and another funny memory that just came around a few days back. A local park down the road has a lake in the middle. Maybe 3-4 acres. City workers were out the other day with long poles scraping in vegetation from around the edge of the lake to create some open water. Remember the skit with Big Chuck standing on a barge and he is employed as a muck raker ?

Mike, when you said you were at Kure Beach I went and watched the webcam, saw people walking around at night. It’s a great area, love the beaches and the water is so much warmer than the Pacific. I’am going to make it back to Myrtle Beach SC one of these days. My nephew lives there and my sister is thinking about moving there as well.

Scottie and Catbat, the pier is the center focal point of Kure Beach. The oldest coastal pier in NC. Only one street light here. You can almost see our house from the one cam angle. My wife enjoys the cam also. I think….because she can keep an eye on me when I say I’m going fishing. If you ever see someone fishing in a red,white and blue chair, thats probably me.
Catbat, mountains/cliffs like you have in CA right along the ocean. Now that the best of both worlds. That would make for some awesome cycle rides.

Mike: I definitely remember Big Chuck as the Kielbasy Kid–very funny. And I think that sketch where he’s mucking the water is from a PARMA PLACE skit with Ernie (Ghoulardi” Anderson when Ghoulardi was still on the air. I read that the mayor of Parma didn’t like PARMA PLACE or the Parma jokes, thinking they gave a bad name to the town. I’d say, “come on, lighten up and grow a funny bone!” That would be like Berwyn’s mayor resenting Svengoolie’s jokes about the town.

Sven/Rich – It seems as though about every six months or so with each batch of newbies (myself included at one time) you have to explain the rules of how and why you choose the movies we see. I’m wondering if there is someway you can put a disclaimer on the blog so you wouldn’t have to explain this and be frustrated each and every time. Just a thought, btw thanks for all you do you know we love you.

Monster Max, check em out on you tube. They are all on there. Start with Ghoulardi and watch a few clips. You’ll get a quick feel for how he operated. He was a tv vigilante as far as what the network executives wanted him to do. Always pushing the boundaries. You would have really liked him.
The Monster Max, Paul Reubens is in the opening scene in that Batman movie before the opening credits. I know what Cheech and Chong movie you’re talking about. A friend and I went to see that at the theater back then. That was funny stuff ! He was also the waiter in The Blues Brothers where he suggests “we have a Dom Perignon ’71 at 120 dollars”.

Clearly a lot of people liked Ghoulardi. There is still a “Big Chuck and Li’l John’s GHOULARDIFEST” — happening in October 2016, in Cleveland, and has been happening for years. That was part of what inspired me to start The Big Blog-Cast rolling. Man, if they can have a fest for a guy who isn’t even on broadcast any more… we can surely get together for our own favorite host.
Pat: Thanks! I think satire-humor can be an excellent way of reconciling differences and addressing issues. I hope it helped.
Mike: I should have said “muck raking” in that one post about the PARMA PLACE episode, a glitch on my part. I loved Hoolihan and Big Chuck’s “Readings by Robert” sketches, too! That was inspired by Chuck’s favorite TV comedian (and idol), Ernie Kovacs, who played a similar character called “Percy Dovetonsils.” Kovacs was way ahead of his time with ingenious visual imagery and gags on the small screen–a genuine comedy genius who left us way too early, due to a tragic car accident.
Max: A small handful (since his show was done live) of Ghoulardi bits are available on You Tube. While the Ghoulardi character resembled an early ’60s beatnik, Jerry G. Bishop’s Svengoolie character was an early ’70s hippie send-up, both ingeniously poking fun at the popular mores and images of their time.
Well just saw Batman V Superman. Good way to break up my week.

I had a thought. Yes, I do have one on the rare occasion. We had set last Wednesday as the time to set the name for our get together. The Big Blogcast won. Then, the very next day, someone came up with Chicken Throwers Ball. Everyone seemed to love it more than they did “Brad”.
So, what if we make our Saturday night viewing party “The Chicken Throwers Ball”? Seems like it a good compromise.
Not going to have a lot of time to contribute to Big Blogcast planning today. Just a couple of random things, and popping in when I can.
I’m playing around with a trivia game for us to play. I’m calling it, “What’s My Line Anyway?” There are a couple of variations of it. One is we give a movie, scene, and character, and people have to identify what they say. The other one is we give the movie, line, and scene and folks have to identify the movie.
Of course, we’d limit it to movies that have been shown on Svengoolie. This is where we’ve seen some of these movies multiple times pays off.
Those curious about Ghoulardi — there is a 55 minute video about him on the Ghoulardifest site.
Now on to the Big Blog-Cast — some FAQ (these are my answers, others may also be true) —
What the heck is The Big Blog-Cast?
– It’s a get-together for fans of Svengoolie and MeTV’s Sci-Fi Saturday. This year’s BBC is planned for August 12-13 at the Baymont Inn in Metropolis, Illinois.
Where the heck is Metropolis, Illinois?
– It’s centrally located, at the very bottom end of Illinois. Right across the river from Paducah, Kentucky. Nearest airports are Paducah and St. Louis, Missouri. It’s also the home of (drumrollllllll) the Superman Museum.
Is this an official Svengoolie event?
– No. MeTV owns exclusive rights to the name, so we would not be allowed to have money change hands or represent Sven officially. Sven is not able to attend (this year). But clearly we know who we are.
What does it cost?
– There is no entrance fee (we’re not that organized). You can figure out your own travel costs on your favorite travel site. You are free to stay at Harrah’s or the Fort Massac campground (both pretty close to the Baymont) or other hotels. We’d encourage you to stay at the Baymont because they’re very friendly people, and we hope to get a “party room” there if enough people are involved.
What’s the schedule? What should I bring?
– Schedule is still shaking down. Of course we want to share Sci-Fi Saturday evening together. We will likely tour the Superman Museum, maybe as a group. Not expecting to have a potluck or costume contest — too difficult for those coming long distances. No guest stars or signings or vendors (this year).
Bring a swimsuit — Baymont has a great indoor pool — and small musical instruments if you play ’em. Also a photo of yourself before age 5. And a t-shirt with your home town on it — university, sports team, tourist, doesn’t matter. And a carton or two of Peeps (try next Monday’s discounts) — the best chickens to throw.
I have an idea for an event. Whom do I contact?

Sven mentioned in his plot synopsis of THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES that an evident jump cut may have omitted, as a last-minute editing decision, any explanation of Sheldon’s psychiatric troubles. Similarly, when he explains that the museum director won’t talk to him about the Queen Anne clock containing Horatio’s letter, and had even barred him from the place, there’s no explanation why. Had there been a falling out between himself and the museum? If so, under what circumstances? Does anybody here on the blog have any idea as to what may have been the problem?–or why the scriptwriters and director decided not to clarify?

I will be flying to Paducah, KY, and should arrive there around 4:30 PM on Thursday, August 11. I will then take a taxi to the Baymont Inn. I will be staying at the Baymont Inn until the afternoon of Sunday, August 14.

Actually, Dale, there was one mayor- an independent- who resented my jokes. He made a point of mentioning that he didn’t like my “depiction” of Berwyn,and, when someone did a huge outdoor Svengoolie mural- we believe he had it painted over! And yet- when I’d show up for a parade, he’d make sure he took a photo with me. At one parade, one of his inebriated female followers came over and read me the riot act about “what I said” about Berwyn. That mayor lasted exactly one term. Every other Berwyn mayor has been very kind to me, understood that I make jokes (and that they are just that- jokes) and appreciate the fame I’ve helped give the town.
I want to be there for the Big Blog Cast, i am going to try. May stop by Berwyn on the way. So i could get lost. Ha!

Thanks, Sven/Rich, for sharing your own experiences about your relationships with the local Berwyn community. It’s good to know that most of the mayors have had a good sense of humor and recognize that this is just good-natured kidding. Also, it’s great publicity for the town. I have to admit I never heard of Berwyn until I first saw your show, and now people all over the nation, due to Me TV, no doubt know there is such a community near Chicago.
Actually, now that I think of it, it was a Parma city council member who objected to Ernie (“Ghoulardi”) Anderson’s Parma jokes and “Parma Place” sketches. Parma’s mayor, on the other hand, admitted he liked “Parma Place.”
It kind of reminds me how The Ghould (Ron Sweed), who followed in Ghoulardi’s footsteps, got a letter from a man who complained about him making fun of white socks (presumably a favorite Parma footwear, according to his jokes). He said that, when he was in the Navy, he was required to wear such socks, and that they were very antiseptic. He feared that The Ghoul’s jokes about the footwear would cause children NOT to wear white socks (heaven forbid!). Talk about having no sense of humor!
Oh, I’m so glad it’s Wednesday (hump day). It’s been a rough week, but Super Sci-Fi Saturday is just around the corner. When I get down in the dumps, I sometimes say to myself, in Horatio’s forlorn voice, “Let’s go back to the well, Melody!” But then something always brings up my spirits again.

It’s set in the Yukon, and whenever Fields’ character intones, “And it ain’t a fit night out for man nor beast!,” he gets hit in the face by a handful of snow thrown by somebody off-screen. Have you ever seen this short? Anybody else? An hilarious satire on then-popular Far North sagas, it’s about a poor boy (Fields’ son) who goes to the big city and is corrupted–there, he has his first drink, and then it’s all downhill for the boy–and for his family– from there!

Dale / Mike / etc. Finally watched Ghoulardi and he is like a Beatnik type . watched a YouTube with his clips. I see how Jerry Bishop was inspired by him. In a competition though,
Rich Koz could have an off night and still rest easy against Ghoulardi .
After that watched another clip show but it had all 80’s horror hosts. Once again in a contest Rich Koz would not sweat it, except against Elvira Mistresses of the Dark. Of course Sven has a better show and has way better movies overall, but her looks and fun attitude would deserve some points in my eyes. I remember some months ago questioning what her beauty would be like today. Well, saw a modern interview with her also last night, and she is incredibly beautiful still !!! couldn’t believe that was her without make up and that she looked that good??!!?? She looks even better now than then because without the make up you could see her natural beauty , and age doesn’t seem to be much of an issue. she also told of her many strange groups of fans that have written to her including monks and nuns. I almost find that hard to believe and gotta laugh at the thought?!

The Monster Max, yeah it was great to see Elvira in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. She looked much different in this movie. Those were indeed some funny scenes! Jimmy crack corn just drove him crazy! A scene that cracked me up was after he got his bike back and he rode through the movie studio wrecking the movie scenes – beach party, Santa Claus and Godzilla!!! Hilarious stuff!

Re Sven shirts — I believe we have no problem wearing them in any numbers in any location (MeTV got its money out of us). Remember the Halloween spook house staff (Kansas City, I think) — not to mention families sportin’ their stuff in Hawaii and other oddball places. I agree, Kodak Kid, we ought to have an appropriate group shot by a Superman icon.
For me every Friday is “Good Friday” — don’t have to work! But do work weekends; that’s why I post so early.

Monster Max, in all fairness comparing Svengoolie and Ghoulardi is kind of an apples to oranges thing. Yes they both hosted late night horror but they had two different styles and did it in different eras.
Sven’s show is pretty much planned,staged and edited as far as the skits go. I think Svengoolie is more artistically talented than Ghoulardi. Ghoulardi had some planned segments but it seemed he mostly flew by the seat of his pants as they say. He was a rebel on tv always pushing the limits and his producers. In the 60’s, that was what young people were all about. I think that’s why he was so popular because people could identify with him. I mean how cool it was to have this guy trying to host a tv show while his crew were throwing fire crackers at him. It was a circus. I read where there was a bar next door to the studio. Ghoulardi would drink up until show time and literally run into the studio putting his wig and mustache on in the hallway to start the show. Big Chuck Shadowski, who worked on the show, talked about how he almost caught the studio on fire one time with his antics. The Cleveland Police Dept said that they attributed a 35 percent decline in juvenile crime due to his show. At his peek , he had 70 percent of the market share for his time slot. That was said to be unheard of for television viewing in those times. He wasn’t afraid to tell people what he thought and often told viewers that his movie was so bad that they should change the channel. Ofcourse, that only made him more intriguing.
Svengoolie is our late night entertainment now and he does an excellent job. Studio standards,censorship and political correctness limit what Sven can do or say on tv now just like everyone else. Sven as I said is multi-talented personality that now has us all captivated with his late night hilarity.
How funny would it be to have the crew surprise Sven one evening by throwing firecrackers at his coffin instead of rubber chickens. Well, funny for us but maybe not so amusing to Sven. I do get an extra chuckle once in a while when Sven gets unexpectedly smacked in the kisser by a flying chicken.

You did mention a smart thing about Sven being limited by standards, censorship , and the evil PC. Wonder how much it limits Sven? I would hate to have some good jokes and have them limited with such nonsense !! Let’s not hurt anyone’s feelings…,Booohooo ,haha. I would love to kick all that pure bullcrap out and let people do what they want, just so they still had some common sense.

Mike M : She did look totally different and had to have someone tell me it was her. That was a funny scene where he’s driving thru the studio. Godzilla falling in back was funny, but how about Twisted Sister video getting a surprise?
Regarding Elvira, I can come up with two big reasons she was so popular.
If you want to see a very young Rich Koz, go to U Tube and punch in son of svengoolie – The Bells of St. BERWYN. A Christmas skit very funny.

Mike : Two BIG reasons,haha. She was also fun with her wit, and do you remember the Breather? I thought that was on Svengoolie when I first started writing but someone corrected me. back in my boyhood so facts could get confusing. I did like some of her movies, and actually got a DVD with her. The movie is called Count Dracula’s Great Love. Jen actually bought it, but when we watched she fell asleep and I got turned on watching it all with even lesbion scenes. I’m sure much was cut out though. She had more fun making fun of her movies than Sven does. might have to do with the fact that most of Svens’ shows were of higher quality, even though hers were fun too.
Going back to Ghoulardi , I do see your point that his was free of care almost as he smoked right on the show too I saw. Cool it was so natural and not restricted as you said, totally agree, but his voice dulled me a bit to be honest, and Rich Kozs’ voice gets me excited and ready to party. Yvette knows all about good voices as hers was very nice.

Keith, I wish I had your brains and know how with that, and I’d be making videos too with all the ideas I have, but maybe better that I’m not. Real fun idea and I bet you had tons of fun making it!
you should get a job with me working for the Romans Bill K , but being a seasonal you might have to take a drastic pay reduction , but it’s all worth it getting fresh air daily and helping people visit their final resting place for me, but think it wouldn’t work for you. Well, having too much fun here, and now plan to spend time with daughter who also is off on this Goooooood Friday!!
The Monster Max: Cassandra Peterson is 64 now and has indeed aged well. She looks like a million bucks! I too didn’t recognize her in Big Adventure but her voice did sound familiar. She did look completely different in the movie than she did as Elvira. I didn’t know the Japanese made Godzilla movies in Hollywood. Ha-ha ! That’s hilarious! I took a look on you tube to see if there was a video for the Twisted Sister song Burn In Hell and they have. I like the fact that most of the comments are about Big Adventure. They have another video for the song it’s listed as Official Banned Music Video and they show various clips from the movie. Good stuff.

da Doctah; I’ve been having the same problem. For a while I thought it was jusy lousy connectivity here. Spokanistan Bell sometimes has problems–the string breaks and none of the tin cans work . . .
Then I noticed every other site was working great.

Lynn, Phibes, da Doctah, David H.- my Norton Security alerted on some “malicious software attack” on this site a few days ago. I sent an email to sven@svengoolie.com ATTN: Admin to let them know about it (hope it got to the admin instead of Sven/Rich- he doesn’t need to be pestered with stuff like that). This is pretty unusual for this site, but a few weeks ago folks were having access problems.
The Monster Max, Paul Reubens would get offers from fans to stop by their house when he is in their town. He went to someone’s house for dinner and when he got there everybody already ate, so they all just sat there and watched him eat. How bizarre is that ?
