A Mummy By Any Other Name Still Stalks- It's "The Mummy's Hand"- Tonight!

Posted on by

Our month with mummies continues tonight on MeTV- as the first sequel to the original "Mummy" unwinds-  when a couple down-on-their luck archeologists stumble on a clue to the whereabouts of the tomb of ancient Egyptian Princess of Ananka- not realizing that it is protected by an evil high priest and the living mummy who loved the Princess in her lifetime! Danger and death will be dealt to all infidels by “The Mummy’s Hand”!

The story starts on the Hill of the Seven Jackals- where Andoheb,an Egyptian loyal to the ancient sect, meets with the dying high priest of Karnak. The old one relates the story of Kharis ( no longer called Imhotep, as in the first film) and reveals why the  poor fellow was entombed alive. Andoheb is told how to use the tana leaves to revive the Mummy of Kharis to ward of any intruders to Ananka’s tomb.

Meanwhile, in an Egyptian bazaar, two failed archeologists, Steve Banning and goofy sidekick Babe Jensen, are about to pull up stakes and find a way back to the States when Steve finds a vase for sale –that appears to have hieroglyphics that could reveal the site of the Princess Ananka’s tomb! Encouraged by this, the boys go to the Cairo Museum and enlist the help of one Dr. Petrie- much to the dismay of his co-worker, who just so happens to be- Andoheb! Steve just needs to find funding for his expedition- and when he and Babe stop at a local bar, they bump into a stage magician named Solvani, whom they convince to bankroll their quest.

At the same time, Andoheb visits the magician’s assistant- his daughter Marta- and plants the seeds  of doubt with her, claiming the boys are shysters and frauds! There’s a confrontation, but Steve finally wins her over, and the group sets out to find the tomb.

Find a tomb they do- but- it isn’t Ananka’s- it’s the one containing Kharis, complete with a supply of tana leaves! When Dr. Petrie is alone in the tomb, Andoheb appears- gives the Mummy the tana leaf solution- and Kharis is again alive, and gets rid of Petrie!

Kharis continues to attack all intruders, invading their camp, in efforts to protect the location of Ananka’s resting place. Andoheb decides that Marta should be his- and soon she and her friends are set to be victims of the living Mummy!

This 1940 follow-up to Karloff's "Mummy" features Tom Tyler as Kharis. You will see some footage of the original movie, augmented by new shots inserted to substitute Tyler for Karloff-and this film sets up the next few sequels in the Mummy franchise. We'll run down the cast, including Dick Foran, Wallace Ford, George Zucco, and Cecil Kellaway; point out some interesting trivia, and bring you a new song. Plus- last week, we showed you the kids costume contest from this year’s Flashback Weekend convention - so, this week, we’ll take a look at the adults contest!

"The Mummy's Hand" runs tonight on Me-TV- at 8 pm eastern/pacific,7 central, or check local listings and/or visit www.metv.com for time and channel where you are. MeTV invites you to join the many fans who live -Tweet during the show on Twitter- using the hashtag #svengoolie  , Chicago area fans can catch up on the first part of the Mummy legend, with Karloff’s “The Mummy” on the U ( at its new channel location) at 11 am!

Last Wednesday, all the major DC comic featured the special Sven backstory bio- which will be repeated in all books out next Wednesday. On Wednesday the 30th- the first chapter of “Svengoolie Meets the DC Universe” will appear in all the major DC titles and proceed for 4 weeks, in the books that come out every Wednesday.

If you’re in the area, you should join us tonight for the huge Halloween street party known as “Nightmare on Chicago Street” in downtown Elgin, IL. Come in costume and enjoy vendors, food, entertainment, and more in the “Safe Zone” of a zombie apocalypse! I’ll do an hour’s signing, and then be onstage for what is always an amazing costume contest! You’ll find info under the “appearances” tab here on our site.

Listen tonight –over night- to WGN radio ( 720 AM), after 2:30 am, when I guest with Dave Plier to talk about many things, including the big “40 Years as Svengoolie” event taking place next Saturday night the 26th at Chicago’s Museum of Broadcast Communications.

Join us on MeTV tonight, when the Mummy gives us all a hand!!

Hurricane- style weather in Egypt, Sinai, Gaza, parts of Israel, maybe Lebanon.
Flooding and damaging winds expected. Including near Cairo and Alexandria.
Hope Mummies don't get disturbed. But that would make an interesting movie plot!

Wish SoCal could have some of our rain!
Un-named
'Tropical Rain,' then
Tropical Storm Olga.
Flash floods potentially expected from Southern LA to Western Tennessee over next few days.
I personally should be ok. My apt complex was islanded during the 2016 'Thousand-Year-Flood. Floodwater got onto the parking lot to where a Lucky-For-Me change in flood zones is marked on insurance maps.
No car or apt here experienced flooding.
Even during 1992 Hurricane Andrew storm surge, no water got into apts past high steps.
Just fingers crossed for whole area, and California too.
From where I estimate Lee Jones lives, he should be ok weather-wise. His family remains in my prayers.

Today is myself and Pat S 20 th wedding anniversery we were married in front of a grocery store where both serviced newspaper vending machines at 3 AM every morning. We met here every morning. We did this because the town where we lived at the time was full of gossipy busibodies . Since this was where carried on our courtship we decided to get married there with all of our friends in attendance. so here we are 20 years later and we are still in love

Some bloggers on Saturday had humorously referred to the Western-like, bar-room brawl scene in THE MUMMY'S HAND. The authors of UNIVERSAL HORRORS point out, in their chapter on HAND, that those kinds of action scenes were a staple of many Universal films from that period (late 1930's-early 1940's).

Also, I'd mentioned yesterday Henry Koster's having been credited with "discovering" Abbott and Costello and recommending that Universal sign the comedy duo to a studio contract. Well, their first appearance in a Universal film was 1940's ONE NIGHT IN THE TROPICS. Interestingly enough, it featured, in a supporting role, Koster's future wife, Peggy Moran, who, of course, played Marta Solvani in HAND.
So the bar room brawl was like the stalwart hero with a comic side kick, kinda stock movie making?
Very much so, Carl.

We’re now six days away from Halloween. So what treats will you be handing out? Or hope to find in your Trick or Treat Bag,

I suggest Dr. Clayton better not give out out fishnets to school kids. That might not go over well.

At least not in adult sizes...

Does the Mummy's Ghost have a hand in tomorrow's movie?
JournalJeff2 DrClayton 25 days ago
Great question!
daleuhlmann DrClayton 25 days ago
You might say that guzzling tana fluid satisfies the Mummy's bad hand-to-mouth habit. See what I did there?
Islander 25 days ago
So I wonder if all the other castaways in the cornfield are now making $2,000 to $3,000 a week in their spare time. But, it's probably difficult to type if your just a Jack in the Box head with no arms.

So the FTC put the kibosh in that sales program and I missed out on the Cloverine bonanza. No wonder the older kids all had minibikes!
Jack Carl_N_Brown 25 days ago
Well, of course it isn’t! Cloverine is a petroleum jelly salve, whereas Dapper Dan Deluxe Pomade contains no petroleum and easily washes out of your hair.
Carl_N_Brown Jack 25 days ago
And on a hot summer day Dapper Dan will not melt in the can, nor on your head!

Ok now it's back. I'll figure this blog out one of these years

I'd mentioned earlier screenwriter-producer Henry Koster. While at Universal from 1936 to 1941, he was credited with having "discovered," on two different occasions, while taking in some shows out on the town, both Deanna Durbin and Abbott and Costello. He then recommended that the studio sign them up, respectively, to long-term contracts.
Jack daleuhlmann 26 days ago
The first time I came across Deanna Durbin was in _Trout Fishing in America_. I had to ask my mom about her. Of course she knew all about Deanna Durbin, and wanted to know why I asked. _Trout Fishing_ was difficult to explain, so I said she was mentioned in a book I was reading.

I just watched Svengoolies last show in 1979, The Supersonic man. Sven has gone on to greatness. In addition I saw an interview with a man named Rich Koz, where a program the Koz Zone is referenced. Where am I going with this? The channel 32 is now fox and the anniversary of Sven. It is great to see a horror host in my time who is still at it, going strong.
Jack Geo 26 days ago
I miss Commander [redacted]. He wasn’t really a horror host, but he hosted a lot of horror. Life isn’t the same without his “Groovie Man’s Tips”! It makes me all the more glad that Sven is still with us!
daleuhlmann Jack 26 days ago
Was that Commander USA? He showed a lot of Mexican-made horror movies pitting masked wrestlers against monsters.
Jack daleuhlmann 26 days ago
¡Sí! But I’m not gonna say it in English ’cause I don’t want to go to el maizal.
Geo daleuhlmann 25 days ago
It was commander USA on the USA network.
Jack Geo 25 days ago
There is no network but MeTV.
